Corrosion mechanisms of ZnMgAl coated steel explained at Eurocorr 2015

For the second year in a row, Christian Allély, Research Engineer at ArcelorMittal Global R&D, was invited to give a presentation on the properties of the ZnMgAl coating at the European Corrosion Congress "Eurocorr".

Last year's presentation was about the role of corrosion products in corrosion mechanisms. This time, the paper focused on the role of ions in rain water in the corrosion mechanism of Zagnelis® (ZnMg3Al3.7). In particular, the role of ammonium and carbonate anions was described  with a special focus on the impact on corrosion products that form in such environments. It was demonstrated that ammonium delays the formation of corrosion products, whereas magnesium and aluminium easily react with carbonate ions and therefore contribute to reinforcing the corrosion resistance of the coating.
