ArcelorMittal showcases S-in motion® steel solutions for auto at SAE World Congress

Representatives from ArcelorMittal’s automotive group were in Detroit, the Motor City, for the 2016 SAE World Congress, a leading automotive industry event held April 12-14 at Cobo Center.

SAE World Congress brought together approximately 11,000 of the brightest minds in the industry to discuss automotive trends and challenges and identify new ways to collaborate and address those opportunities into the future. This year’s event, “Powering Possibilities,” was packed with keynote remarks from industry leaders and intimate technical sessions focused on topics ranging from propulsion and powertrain to materials and sustainability.


SAE World Congress also features an Innovators Only Exhibition, showcasing innovations from OEMs, top-tier suppliers and other related companies from around the world. For the third consecutive year, ArcelorMittal was invited to participate in the exhibition, this year showcasing key S-in motion® solutions.

S-in motion® is a set of lightweighting steel solutions developed by ArcelorMittal. S-in motion® launched in 2010 with the introduction of the C-segment sedan. Today, the portfolio has expanded to offer lightweighting solutions for light commercial trucks, pickup trucks, C-segment electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as other vehicle part solutions.

At SAE World Congress, ArcelorMittal also showcased the newly launched S-in motion® Mid-sized Sedan/SUV, which will be officially rolled out at Great Designs in Steel conference in May.

“The highly technical audience at SAE World Congress served as the perfect opportunity to discuss our new S-in motion® Mid-sized Sedan/SUV platform,” said Paul Schurter, global technology manager, automotive product applications, ArcelorMittal Global R&D. “We were able to make this innovation come to life through an augmented reality experience. This allowed individuals to explore and interact with the S-in motion® Mid-size Sedan, seeing various parts of the vehicle and steel grades in a 3-D virtual display module.”

The S-in motion® Mid-Size Sedan/SUV platform demonstrates that it is possible to achieve substantial weight reduction with advanced steels on a multi-vehicle platform. While a mid-size sedan and SUV share a substantial number of common parts, they have widely different vehicle masses and powertrains. Often, weight reduction is limited on the smaller vehicle in the platform. Yet, ArcelorMittal achieved weight reductions in excess of 20 percent on both vehicle versions compared to a 2015 baseline and did so at an attractive lightweighting cost to the customer.

ArcelorMittal will discuss S-in motion® further on May 12 in a webinar hosted by Automotive Manufacturing Solutions. The presentation will take a closer look at new advanced products and solutions for hot-stamping, cold-stamping and martensitic steels.
