Corrosion mechanisms of ZnMgAl coated steels in natural environments

Our colleague Marcele Salgueiro, PhD student at ArcelorMittal Global R&D, will make public the result of her work at the 1st European Steel Technology & Application Days (ESTAD) conference held by the Fédération Française de l’Acier (FFA) in Paris on 7 & 8 April 2014.

Marcele will present the corrosion mechanisms of zinc-magnesium-aluminium (ZnMgAl) coated steels in natural environments (ZnMg3wt.%Al3.7wt.%: ArcelorMittal brands Magnelis® & ZagnelisTM).

Combining surface analysis and electrochemical techniques, Marcele demonstrates that the outstanding corrosion resistance of ZnMgAl is due to the formation and stability of highly protective corrosion products. The role played by Mg and Al on the corrosion mechanism is clearly evidenced.
