US Patent and Trademark Office confirms Usibor®'s full validity and scope

On February 19, 2013, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) posted a Notice of Allowance of a re-issue of ArcelorMittal pioneer patent US 6 296 805 on aluminium pre-coated steel product for hot stamping, worldwide known as Usibor®, confirming its full validity and scope.

The USPTO's decision is in agreement with ArcelorMittal’s position that the Usibor® patent applies notably to cold-rolled steel for hot stamping, with a final UTS of more than 1000 MPa.

ArcelorMittal is pleased with the decision confirming its patent rights for this innovative technology and will continue to vigorously enforce and defend its patent rights against any potential infringement.

Usibor®: a very high-growth market

The Usibor® market is experiencing continuous growth and has benefited from very strong demand from car manufacturers which are widely using hot stamping in order to achieve lighter vehicles.

Usibor® steel meets the requirements of customers in the automotive industry to reduce the weight of their vehicles while improving their safety in order to pass the Euro NCAP crash tests.

Usibor® also complies with environmental standards. For instance, the manufacture of Usibor® releases less CO2 than does aluminium. Furthermore, cars manufactured from Usibor® consume less energy because they are lighter and therefore release less CO2.

Finally, the technical characteristics of the product facilitate stamping, which is critical for car manufacturers.

Related information

Usibor® 1500P is a pre-coated (aluminised coating) steel grade for hot forming process. The aluminum–silicon pre-coating was developed to protect the metal from oxidation (scale) and decarburization during the hot stamping process.
