ArcelorMittal Tailored Blanks has developed a dedicated hybrid (Plasma-Laser) welding process for the Laser Welded Blanks chassis applications. This hybrid (laser + plasma) welding process shows better fatigue performance than a standard laser welding for such applications where fatigue load case are important.

This improved process is due to:

  • Softer transition
  • Better homogeneity of the welded zone (thanks to slower cooling)
  • Softer surface: less sensitive to micro-defects

The principle of the Laser Welded Blanks solution is to integrate the spring pans:

  • 1 part instead of 3
  • 1 stamping tool
  • Less post-stamping assembly operations
  • Weight savings: 3.2kg saved (17%)
