In this sixth automotive video episode you will learn more about how VAMA, our joint-venture facility in China, completes ArcelorMittal's automotive worldwide footprint.

China now has the world's fastest-growing automotive market and is expected to account for 35 per cent of worldwide automotive growth by 2020. To meet the rise in demand for Advanced High Strength Steels, ArcelorMittal recently inaugurated a greenfield state-of-the-art steel facility in China through a joint venture with Valin Steel.

Despite some language challenges and cultural differences, the team pulled together and production was officially kicked off as expected on 15 June 2014," comments VAMA's Chief Technology Officer Jurgen Cobbaut, who is proud of what has been achieved: "We have built world-class facilities with the latest technical capabilities, able to provide the best solutions for global auto customers in producing advanced high strength steels, including Usibor®, which is the iPhone 6 of automotive steel.”

VAMA – our automotive joint venture with Hunan Valin Iron & Steel Co – has been a game-changer in more than one way:

  • Holds the industry record worldwide for the fastest completion of a greenfield project – in less than 800 days 
  • Brings the production of highly sophisticated automotive steel solutions into China
  • VAMA has an initial capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per year
    • 800,000 tonnes of cold rolled steels
    • 500,000 tonnes of hot-dip galvanised steels
    • 200,000 tonnes of aluminium-coated steels
  • This capacity can be expanded up to 2.3 million tonnes
