LWB feasibility analysis and technology expertise

ArcelorMittal’s Global R&D experts study vehicle design to determine where laser welded blanks can optimize vehicle design while meeting the OEM’s goals for lightweighting and safety. The initial study focuses on material characterization and reducing risk.

Further feasibility analysis can be carried out to:

  • Compare the performance of LWBs using different steel grades
  • Assess the feasibility of a part
  • Provide data for numerical stamping simulations of an LWB

The data for this feasibility assessment is usually obtained from the Forming Limit Curve of the laser-welded area.

Expertise in laser welding technology

Tailored Blanks’ experts are familiar with all the latest laser welding technologies including:

  • CO2
  • Disk
  • Direct diode
  • Fiber
  • Yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG)

An experimental evaluation of the formability of the laser welded seam can be performed to determine if it meets the required part severity defined by the OEM. This analysis includes:

  • Blanking quality analysis
  • Hardness measurement in the welded area
  • Weld geometry
  • 180° bending test
  • Erichsen test
  • Tensile test
  • U-forming test
  • Forming analysis – Visio plasticity
  • Fiber laser welding technology uses high power (up to 8 kW) to provide high beam quality.

  • Our laser welding knowledge covers all the latest technologies.
