Tailored shaped blanks

A tailored shaped blank is a blank which is the exact shape of the final part, called net shaped, or close to that shape, called near-net shaped.

By using a blank which is close to the final shape, OEMs can:

  • Reduce the complexity of their stamping dies

  • Increase productivity

  • Reduce scrap rates

Tailored shaped blanks are ideal for exposed parts which require the best quality surface. For example, body-side outers require a blank shape which facilitates wrinkle-free deep drawing and results in a quality surface which has a very flat appearance after painting.

Advantages of tailored shaped blanks

Advantages of tailored shaped blanks:

  • Extending forming limits: ArcelorMittal’s range of advanced high strength steels (AHSS) for automotive increases the forming limits for parts. The laser-cut edge is suitable for extreme shapes and techniques such as flanging.
  • Accelerate processing and reduce costs: tailored shaped blanks do not require dies. As well as eliminating this cost, the process can be accelerated. As soon as the blank is designed it can be uploaded to the laser cutting machine and production can begin.
  • No laser cutting of the edge: for hot stamped parts, tailored shaped blanks avoid the need for laser cutting of the edge of the hardened (stamped) part. Removing this step simplifies the production process and minimizes costs at the same time.

Applications for tailored shaped blanks

Tailored shaped blanks are an ideal solution for vehicles which are in the prototyping phase or early production/launch loop. They are also a cost-effective solution for vehicles with limited production volumes, such as luxury cars, and for applications which require large-dimension blanks.

Net shaped and near-net-shape blanks are cut with high precision. Almost any shape can be achieved, and size is only limited by coil or sheet width.
