Honda's Acura features world-first single-piece door ring

Honda’s 2014 Acura model features a new single-piece laser-welded door ring design. Developed by Honda in cooperation with ArcelorMittal and ArcelorMittal Tailored Blanks, the laser-welded design replaced a conventional multi-piece spot-welded version. This significant body structure component is designed to protect passengers while optimizing the weight and cost of the Acura.

The solution uses Usibor® 1500, an aluminum-silicon coated advanced high strength steel (AHSS). Prior to welding the blanks together, the steel undergoes a proprietary laser ablation process. The new door ring is then stamped as one part instead of the four parts which are usually required.

Forming the part requires just one stamping tool and one stamping operation. No post-assembly tasks are required. By reducing the number of parts and operations required, and by reducing the engaged (gross) weight, the overall cost of ownership for the door ring is significantly lowered.

The Honda Acura door-ring received the 2015 PACE Award which recognizes supplier innovation.

“We had to rethink how could we redistribute these even more concentrated loads in a way that we keep people safe. One of the ways we did this was with the new hot-stamped door ring. The entire structure around the doors are made with this super strong high-strength steel. To our knowledge, we are the first and only people that apply hot stamping in this way."

“Weight was one of the ways to improve fuel economy. Taking weight out of a car and making a car stronger is not an easy thing. Despite it being a much stronger, safer car, it is 275 pounds (125 kg) lighter than the outline car.”

Jim Keller, 2014 Acura MDX Chief Engineer
