Chevrolet’s press release about its all-new Silverado, December 2017
Chevrolet’s all-new 2019 Silverado is 450 pounds (204 kg) lighter due to the extensive use of mixed materials. The vehicle’s fully boxed steel frame is 88 pounds (40 kg) lighter than its predecessor, while offering 10% greater torsional rigidity.
Around 80% of the frame is made of high strength steel varying from 2 to 5 millimeters in thickness. Every millimeter is optimized for performance using a variety of processes including hydroforming, roll forming, conventional stamping, and tailor-rolled blanking.
For example, a higher-grade alloy is used in the roll-formed, high-strength-steel bed floor, contributing to a bed that is more functional and lighter weight. The Silverado’s safety cage also makes significant use of advanced high strength steels, each tailored for the specific application.
