November, 2024 – Valin ArcelorMittal Automotive Steel Co., Ltd (VAMA) marked its 10th anniversary of Start of Production (SOP) with a special customer day event in Chengdu. Bringing together industry experts and key stakeholders across the value chain, the event fostered dialogue on advancing sustainability through innovation.
Over the past decade, VAMA has prioritized innovation and customer-focused solutions, becoming a leader in comprehensive automotive steel offerings. The company remains committed to strengthening partnerships across the supply chain to navigate market shifts, drive industry progress, and build a sustainable and resilient ecosystem for the future.
The innovative ArcelorMittal Multi Part Integration® solution - unlocking the power of less by reducing the number of parts, and achieving significant CO2 savings, all while meeting stringent performance standards for safety and lightweighting - was also highlighted during the ceremony.
For the development of the international and domestic automotive industry chain, Fu Yuwu, Honorary Chairman of the Society of Automotive Engineers of China, made a comprehensive analysis, a detailed prediction of the development trend and an interpretation of the development path of new energy development and after-market opportunities. He expects enterprises like VAMA to persist in innovation, give full play to their technological advantages, and continue to help the industry to a more environmentally friendly, safer, and lighter future, and promote the sustainable and healthy development of the automotive ecology. The sharing of Chairman Fu provides professional references for the whole industry to plan and strategize to win the future with a broader vision.
"The future development of car body materials presents a trend of low-carbon, structural integration, design and digital intelligence. By leveraging its internationally leading technological advantages and persistently promoting technological innovation, VAMA has made significant progress in these fields."
Fu Yuwu, Honorary Chairman of the Society of Automotive Engineers of China
From 1,000 MPa, 1,500 MPa to 2,000 MPa, the strength of steels, especially PHS, is constantly breaking through. As the eternal topic of structural materials for car bodies, the key to balancing strength and lightness lies in “innovation”.
As a technology-based company with innovation as its foundation, VAMA has always been committed to the localization of high value-added products. In the field of research and development of new steel grades, VAMA insists on innovation and upgrading, and inputs the driving force for the innovation of the automotive industry through the updating and iteration of automotive steel products and technology. From DP1180 to Usibor ®2000, VAMA never stops its steps.
"We are currently in the middle of a wave of technological innovation and must focus on independent and positive research and development of core technologies. We hope that VAMA can provide automotive manufacturers with a broader design space, and in the future, we need to gather upstream and downstream partners to jointly build a green and healthy ecosystem."
Wu Liang, Director of Car Body of NIO
"The Body-in-White must resist to higher crash loads: materials and welds must be stronger and more ductile… Lightweight with steel is the only cost competitive material alternative to the additional batteries option."
Henri GUYON, Manager of ArcelorMittal's Global R&D
“We hope to build a truly sustainable industry ecosystem with everyone's effort, and help China's automotive industry chain develop in a sustainable and high-quality path!”
Zhou Jian, CEO of VAMA
Deepening trust through cooperation to build a sustainable and healthy industry ecology
Over the past ten years, VAMA has been committed to being a trustworthy supplier. Hunan Iron & Steel Group, one of the shareholders, has invested 15 billion RMB in restructuring and technological upgrading of upstream steel suppliers LYS to continuously and steadily supply high-quality and low-carbon HRC to VAMA.
While guaranteeing the reliability of upstream supply, LYS helps VAMA to produce high-value, green and low-carbon automotive steel. In 2016, VAMA formed a joint venture with Gonvarri, a leading global steel processing service provider, to establish GONVVAMA as a supporting extension of the downstream industry chain. This further enhances VAMA's ability to supply high value-added automotive products.
