Live webinar: Tuesday 17th December - 14:00 GMT / 15:00 CET / 9:00 EST / 6:00 PST
In this webinar we discussed the nature of the carbon challenge for steel and the possible technological solutions. We presented ArcelorMittal’s ambitions and our actions to ensure steel production contributes to a significant reduction of the global CO2 emissions. We introduced the measures we are talking to provide reassurance that the entire steel supply chain from mines to delivery on all Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) issues meets all your expectations.
We are actively exploring distinct pathways to make steel production more sustainable, with pilot projects for each:
We introduced the new steel certification schemes called ResponsibleSteelTM and the related mine site certification schemes.
In addition, we explained why making vehicles lighter with smart steel solutions is the most efficient way today to reduce CO2 emissions. Everybody knows there is no better way of improving fuel economy and reducing CO2 emissions than by taking weight out of the vehicle. However, not everybody also realizes that lightweighting electric vehicles (EVs) is by far the most efficient and fast way to further reduce CO2 emissions in the materials production.
For example, combining laser welding with nesting optimization results in a more sustainable and cost-efficient production process for vehicle parts. It optimizes steel usage and opens the door to significant cost reductions for OEMs without affecting the part’s mechanical properties.
