ArcelorMittal’s newest galvanising line, named Galsa 2, has commenced operations in Florange (France). The first coil, weighing 22 tonnes, was produced on 20 December 2019 after almost two years of construction and testing.
The line is the second galvanising facility for Florange. It has been designed to produce galvanised steel – primarily Usibor® for the automotive market. Usibor® is used by carmakers to design lighter, safer and more environmentally friendly vehicles, in line with the ambition of the European Commission Green Deal.
Construction of the new line began in April 2018 on a 7.6-hectare site in Florange. Total cost of the project was almost €89 million.
The commissioning of the Galsa 2 line is a further step in the evolution of ArcelorMittal’s Florange mill. Products from the new facility will primarily supply local automotive and industry customers in eastern France and western Germany. ArcelorMittal Florange is already highly regarded by major automotive customers for its expertise in advanced high strength steels (AHSS) for the automotive sector.
ArcelorMittal Florange employs 2,200 people and produces over 2.3 million tonnes of steel annually. That’s the equivalent of one Eiffel Tower per day.
