Gestamp becomes first Tier 1 automotive supplier to purchase XCarb® green steel certificates

Driving sustainability

In October 2021, Gestamp, a leading supplier of components to the global automotive industry, became the first Tier 1 supplier in the automotive sector to buy XCarb® green steel certificates from ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products. The steels covered by the certificates will be used to produce automotive components and will enable Gestamp to deepen its commitment to the decarbonisation of its business. Gestamp has set ambitious targets to reduce emissions from its activities and supply chain by 2030. The certificates will help Gestamp to meet its commitment to decarbonise its operations and reduce indirect emissions from purchased goods (known as Scope 3 emissions). The XCarb® green steel certificates are issued by ArcelorMittal Europe based on emission savings from decarbonisation initiatives which are already being deployed.

Javier Imaz, Procurement and CAPEX Corporate Director at Gestamp

“At Gestamp, we have an ambitious sustainability strategy to reduce the carbon footprint of our activity. This will help our customers to reduce their own Scope 3 emissions by using our products. Sustainability and CO2 footprint reduction have become central pillars in the automotive business. Our clients want their suppliers to become greener. But to achieve that, the full supply chain must work together. The XCarb® green steel certificates from ArcelorMittal are just the first step on a journey the entire automotive sector needs to undertake. We have sustainability in our DNA. Gestamp shares that vision with ArcelorMittal, and we are happy to be partners in the journey towards decarbonisation. Gestamp has been a pioneer in reducing the levels of CO2 required to create our products. We are fortunate to have a partner such as ArcelorMittal to help us and to support our clients to reach their own goals.”

Gestamp is constantly seeking ways to make its industrial activity as sustainable and environmentally responsible as possible. The company has set clear commitments and targets for the reduction of emissions from its own operations and its supply chain by 2030. The targets have been established in accordance with scientific criteria approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). SBTi is a partnership between CDP (formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Gestamp will pass the XCarb® green steel certificates to customers who purchase products manufactured with the steels covered by the certificates. This will enable the world's leading vehicle manufacturers to utilise lightweight steel products and benefit from decarbonisation activities undertaken by ArcelorMittal.

Gestamp uses a wide range of products from ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products including hot- and cold-rolled advanced high strength steels (AHSS). The steels are typically used to create parts for the body-in-white and chassis of vehicles produced by the world’s leading carmakers.

“ArcelorMittal Europe launched our XCarb® green steel certificates with the intention of setting a new benchmark for the steel industry. They offer customers such as Gestamp a verified way to benefit from the CO2 savings that we are achieving as part of our roadmap to net-zero steelmaking.”

Certificates complement existing emission reduction projects

Gestamp has already committed to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30 percent by 2030. For Scope 3 emissions, the company is targeting a 22 percent reduction in the same timeframe. To meet these goals, Gestamp has launched projects at more than 40 plants worldwide. Progress is closely monitored within the business and reports are verified by external organisations such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

“ArcelorMittal and Gestamp share the same mindset regarding how to be a responsible global organisation,” says Javier Imaz. “We both work internationally to reach a level of excellence which satisfies the needs of each and every one of our clients. We also share a passion for R&D and innovation. Nurturing our teams to find the best solutions for safer, lighter and greener mobility is a part of our daily work.”

“We have sustainability in our DNA,” continues Javier Imaz. “Gestamp shares that vision with ArcelorMittal, and we are happy to be partners in the journey towards decarbonisation. Gestamp has been a pioneer in reducing the levels of CO2 required to create our products. We are fortunate to have a partner such as ArcelorMittal to help us and to support our clients to reach their own goals.”

“XCarb® green steel certificates can be supplied with all ArcelorMittal products including automotive and electrical steels, and laser welded blanks. That gives part designers and engineers full design freedom and enables companies such as Gestamp to reduce their Scope 3 emissions at the same time.”
