Webinar video: reducing the carbon footprint thanks to greener steel production and smart steel solutions

ArcelorMittal is actively exploring pathways to make steel production more sustainable, with pilot projects in areas such as: clean-power steelmaking and circular, low-emission carbon steelmaking. In this webinar, Alan Knight, Head of corporate responsibility and sustainable development, explores the nature of the carbon challenge for steel and the possible technological solutions. Plus, Jérôme Favero, Head of automotive steel solutions, describes how making vehicles lighter with smart steel solutions or using innovative design solutions is the most efficient way today to reduce CO2 emissions.

 

In this webinar we discuss the nature of the carbon challenge for steel and the possible technological solutions. We present ArcelorMittal’s ambitions and our actions to ensure steel production contributes to a significant reduction of the global CO2 emissions. We introduce the measures we are talking to provide reassurance that the entire steel supply chain from mines to delivery on all Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) issues meets all your expectations.

We introduce the new steel certification schemes called ResponsibleSteelTM and the related mine site certification schemes.

In addition, we explain why making vehicles lighter with smart steel solutions is the most efficient way today to reduce CO2 emissions. Everybody knows there is no better way of improving fuel economy and reducing CO2 emissions than by taking weight out of the vehicle. However, not everybody also realizes that lightweighting electric vehicles (EVs) is by far the most efficient and fast way to further reduce CO2 emissions in the materials production.

For example, combining laser welding with nesting optimization results in a more sustainable and cost-efficient production process for vehicle parts. It optimizes steel usage and opens the door to significant cost reductions for OEMs without affecting the part’s mechanical properties.
