Today, mobility is evolving at a greater pace than ever before. New powertrains are challenging the dominance of the internal combustion engine (ICE) and creating almost unlimited opportunities to transform vehicle design. It’s an exciting time to be part of the industry, and steel is continuing to adapt and evolve to support it.

Whatever the powertrain, steel offers carmakers the optimal balance of strength, performance, and mass reduction with the least impact on the environment. Steel is the material of choice for today’s vehicles and will remain the material of choice for vehicles of tomorrow.

Smart steels solutions are developed by smart passionate people, that is why ArcelorMittal employs 1300 full-time researchers worldwide. Around one third of their efforts is devoted to automotive & mobility. We develop new steels, steel solutions and steel-making processes that are more versatile, sustainable and affordable.

As the world’s leading steelmaker for the automotive sector, ArcelorMittal is continuously innovating our portfolio and working with carmakers to help them meet current and future challenges including:

  • Lightweighting

ArcelorMittal already offers a comprehensive range of advanced high strength steels (AHSS) which enable OEMs to achieve their lightweighting targets at little to no additional cost. These innovative steels can be used to lightweight vehicles any vehicle type. Though our industry leading S-in motion® studies, we have already identified significant weight savings for a range of vehicle types and parts including ICE and battery electric vehicles (BEV).

  • Electric vehicles

Our most recent product innovations and solutions enable OEMs to add battery protection without significantly affecting the weight of the vehicle. ArcelorMittal’s iCARe® range of electrical steels is also helping OEMs extend the range and performance of their electric vehicles drastically. As a battery electric vehicle (BEV) is heavier (due to the weight of the battery pack), more AHSS is required to strengthen the chassis and absorb energy during a crash.

  • Autonomous mobility

Cost will remain a major factor for manufacturers of autonomous and shared mobility services and steel remains the most affordable solution on the market. Thanks to its inherent high strength, AHSS also makes a significant contribution to passenger safety. And safety, rather than weight, will be one of the main considerations in the design of vehicles with any level of autonomy. ArcelorMittal’s advanced high strength offer and expertise will enable OEMs to achieve new designs and create the safest mobility solutions of the future.
